ANNUAL PATRIOTIC CRAFTS DAY

Stop by the library any time between
3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 27th
To make a 4th of July decoration. Kids 8 and
under must have an adult caregiver to assist them with their creation.  No registration required.

Reading with your children encourages good reading habits.
Read 20 or more books to your pre-reader between July 1st and
August 31st  and receive special awards beginning
July 7th.

Reading Bug Reading Club

CATCH THE READING BUG
Summer Reading Club


Young people able to read on their own up to and including those entering 6th grade are invited to join the reading club. Members agree to read 5 books on their reading level between July 1st and August 31st. Beginning Monday, July 7th, reading incentives will be given when book reports are submitted. A reading record will be provided to keep track of the books read. An introduction sheet is available upon registration. Children with disabilities preventing them from reading or holding regular books may fulfill the reading club requirements with talking books. Those readers who complete the club requirements may request to have a letter sent to their school principal highlighting their achievement.

READ & RIDE THE CAROUSEL!

Tuesday, August 12th, 10:00 a.m.
Floyd Memorial Library

Children who register in advance will be treated to a story, ice cream and free ride on the
carousel in Greenport. We’ll meet at the Floyd Memorial Library and walk with
caregivers to Mitchell Park.
Register early, free carousel tickets are limited. In the event of rain, this event will be cancelled.

Arts and Crafts

 

BUTTERFLY OBSERVATION HOUSE 

  In honor of our insect theme, we will have a butterfly pavilion habitat with Painted Lady caterpillars in the children’s room for you to enjoy. Be sure and check it out each time you visit the library to observe their transformation from
caterpillar to butterfly


OPEN HOUSE CRAFTS

Tuesdays:  July 8th through August 12th ~  2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library
Families are invited to stop by any time between 2:00 and 3:30 and create a craft. Projects will be available on different skill levels to accommodate varying ages. A caregiver must accompany children who are ages eight and under to assist them with their creation. Please wear appropriate clothing for using glue and paint.
No advance registration required.


LET’S DRAW!

Thursdays  July 10 – Aug.  14 from 10:00 – 10:40 a.m.
Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library
Youngsters going into first and second grade will enjoy drawing under the guidance of local artist Sharon
Carita. This program emphasizes drawing for the pure
fun of it as each child realizes  there is no right or
wrong way to draw.   Registration is limited.

This program is a continuation of the Let’s Draw program and is open to children who have completed the first series with Sharon Carita.
Registration is required.

These Monday programs at 2 p.m. are for children entering grades 1 – 3 and are shared with Southold and Floyd Memorial libraries.

ROBOBUGS TO GO!

Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 6:00- 7:30 p.m. 
Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library 

Kids entering grades 3-7, this is a fun program using your imagination to come up with ways of reusing common items during a group discussion of recycling and conservation issues.  Participants should bring an empty cleaned soda can to build their own walking soda can Robobug model robot which vibrates, walks, and makes sounds.  This event is sponsored by 4EC (East End Education Enrichment Coalition) of which your library is a member.


SIDEWALK ART AND  PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW

Saturday, August 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library
Young people of any age are invited to exhibit a piece of their artwork or photography. This show is a library tradition going back over 30 years.  A list of guidelines is available upon registration. 
Exhibit pieces ready for hanging may be dropped off at the library during the week prior to the exhibit. 


SAND ART CRAFT

Monday, August 4, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
Floyd Memorial Library
Children entering grades 1 to 6 will use a provided sand art bottle to create innovative art using super vibrant sand colors under the direction of Kathy Giovalakis. 

This program is shared by Southold and Floyd Memorial Libraries.


PAINTING ROCKS!

Thursday, August 7th at 2:00 p.m.
Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library

Participants entering grades 3 to 6 will paint rocks to resemble ladybugs, bumblebees, or other creepy crawlies to decorate your garden or desk. The Cutchogue-New Suffolk library staff will provide the rocks and paint, you bring your imagination!

Special Programs

 

ANY TIME  ~ ~ ~ ~  GAME TIME!

Too hot or too wet for outside activity?  Any time the meeting room is not in use, our collection of children’s games will be available for you and your friends to play.  Games available are: chess, Checkers, Candyland,
Connect Four, Battleship, Yahtzee, Sorry, Scrabble and more.  Children ages eight and under must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.


 

BRADY  RYMER  IN  CONCERT

Monday, July 7th, 6:30 p.m.
Silversmith Corner, Southold

No Registration Required
Summer programs kickoff with Brady’s assortment of songs for “kids with a rock ‘n’ roll heart!” Bring a lawn chair or blanket! This event is sponsored by the North Fork libraries. If it rains, call your library for a change in location. 


 

FRIDAY FAMILY FLICKS

Fridays @ 4:00 p.m. 7/25 through 8/22

Movies and refreshments in our new community room! This is something families can enjoy together. Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Each week’s movie will be posted in the children’s room and some are rated PG.  No registration required and
there will be  no movie Friday, August 1st.     

     


 

YOGA FOR KIDS 

Mondays  July 7 through August 18  ~ 11:00 to 11:30 a.m.
Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library
Hatha yoga instructor Rosemary Martilotta will lead children ages 3 and up through exercises and gentle stretching to
increase awareness of their bodies for personal growth. Wear ‘comfy’ clothes and bring a mat or thick bath towel.


 

BOATS, WATER & KIDS

Wednesday, July 9th from 3:00 – 3:45 p.m.
Caregivers are welcome too!

Boating safety with Roy De Meo of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Using slides and fun-filled demonstrations, children up to age 9 learn to be prepared for a day on the water in a small boat.  You’ll learn about boat balancing and loading, being a good lookout, the importance of letting someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back; and, a hands-on demonstration of the proper way to wear life jackets.


 

Bugs Away

Darlene Fulda and David Dingle bring years of vocal and piano experience to teach little ones the joys of jazz!  Join the Dingle Duo as they crawl, fly, and squirm to the music… with bugs as their guides!!  This is a shared program with Southold and Floyd Memorial Libraries.


SUNWISE FOR KIDS

 A special program on for kids 5 to 8 years old, on the importance of protecting themselves from the sun and how to do it. Hats, glasses and suntan lotion will be given out to each child.


FLOWER FAIRY TEA PARTY

Come listen to a tale about a flower fairy, make a craft, and enjoy “tea”
and fairy cakes. If you want, you may wear your prettiest party clothes.

ERIK’S REPTILE EDVENTURE

Thursday, July 17th at 1:00 p.m.

Enjoy a fun educational experience where you can see, touch and learn about fascinating reptiles and amphibians. If it rains, the program will be held at the Greenport Rec. Center.


DINO-BLAST

Friday, July 18, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library
A hands-on ‘dinosaurous’ experience to provide children entering grades 1 to 6 interesting information about dinosaurs.  Dinosaur replicas are used to introduce the differences between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. The program is loaded with fun facts and culminates with each child making a copy of a dinosaur tooth. 
This is a shared program with Floyd Memorial Library.

WORLD OF BIRDS  
Thursday, July 24 at 1 p.m.

The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary will lead a
 general discussion of birds for grades K – 6 and then give the audience an up-close look at a parrot,
hawk, owl, or falcon. 
This is a shared program to be held at the Floyd
Memorial Library in Greenport.

CHILDREN’S STORYTELLING FESTIVAL

Sunday, July 27th - 2:00-5:00 PM
You are invited to enjoy storytelling, children’s music, balloons and face painting at the Fourth Annual Children’s Festival at Mitchell Park in Greenport.
No admission ~ no registration!
Co-sponsored by the Southold Mother’s Club and the East End Education Enrichment Coalition (4EC) .


“CATERPILLAR HUNTER” LIVE THEATRE EVENT

Tuesday, August 5 at 6:00 p.m.
Silversmith Corner, Southold.

No registration required.
Based on the beloved character of the late Steve Irwin, the Caterpillar Hunter shrinks himself and sets off to explore the terrain – pursuing elusive bugs and strange herbage in the wild recesses of  a common North American vegetable garden.  All ages will enjoy this family drama presented by The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company. 
Bring your own folding chairs. 
This is a shared program and will be held at Silversmith’s Corner in Southold.  In the event of rain, it will be held at the Southold Methodist Church. 


SCIENCE ON THE MOVE

Wednesday, August 6, 2008 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
The Cutchogue - New Suffolk Free Library.

This traveling science museum is designed as a family
program where children ages 5 and up with adults will be able to view 60 exhibits through a hands-on experience.  Topics such as electricity, physical science, magnetism, animal
tracking, and much more will be explored. This is a shared program with Southold and Floyd Memorial libraries.


STOMP IT UP CONCERT

Friday, August 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. on the Cutchogue Village Green
Enjoy a highly entertaining and interactive concert for children ages 3 to 6 when Miss Darlene
will get them up and dancing with instruments for every little hand to hold. 
This is a shared program with Southold and Floyd Memorial libraries. 
Location will be the Cutchogue Village Green.
 In the event of rain, the program will be held in the Cutchogue - New Suffolk Free Library.

Families with children ages 3 to 7 will join us for a special visit with children’s author Erica Perl. She will entertain us with an evening of activities inspired by her popular picture books, “Chicken Bedtime is Really Early” and “Ninety-Three in My Family”.
